Assignment 4

The idea of realism or reality in itself is a very intriguing one.  In my opinion, whether or not something is considered to be "realistic" is entirely subjective or dependent on the individual viewer. For example, in the film Black Mirror, it is understandable that the audience may see the narrative of the story as being "realistic".  This is a result of the plot of the film and its containing of relatable scenarios and ideals revolving around the daily lives and trepidations of individuals.  Mullholland Drive, can also be seen in a very similar manner, in which the film acknowledges that it itself is very much like a movie in its plot and situations, breaking the norms of narrative hollywood film.  However most notably in the film Mullholland Drive, it is very important to not this breaking of conventional hollywood tactics.  This is because by doing so, the director is able to make a point regarding hollywood and its ability to glamorize film and acting.  Hollywood and film create a distorted "reality" in which anyone looking in sees nothing but glamour and fame, which often times is far from the truth, especially for struggling actors and actresses trying to make it to the "big screen" and become a "star".  As for Black Mirror, the director comments on the idea of reality by connecting the narrative to real world issues regarding technology, specifically that of fear.  The film tells stories revolving around this underlying fear about the power of technology and what it is capable of that many of us have in today's modern age.

  1. I agree on all parts, specifically the first half. The mise en scene of these films suggests reality. The settings, characters and costumes are accurate to our reality. With the plot being fiction, the familiar visuals keep us questioning what is and what isn't real.
