Hello, my name is Ayu Sutriasa and I'll be a senior at Macalester College in Saint Paul. My major is in Religious Studies, not because I am religious, but because I am fascinated by how religion trickles into everyday life, and how it has affected humanity throughout history. I'm taking classes at the U this summer because I spent my last year in France, and I need some more credits. I specifically took this class because I am very interested in film studies. I've only taken a couple classes in film, one of them in French film, but I really enjoy analyzing films and how they speak to the deeper human condition. I hope to further my knowledge and scope of cinema in this class.
My favorite genre of film is the documentary. You know the really boring documentaries your teachers made you watch in high school? Yeah well I love those. But as for more mainstream content, one of my favorite movies is Some Like It Hot. I think it breaks down gender roles and questions the societal gender binary. I also happen to be a fan of Marilyn Monroe. I also really enjoyed the newest Mad Max. Its futuristic wasteland seemed to really not be so futuristic. While it commented on how we're basically destroying our natural resources it also had a strong feminist prose that I really enjoyed.
